Self Compassion, Letting Go of Guilt

I usually start out my cruise with a set of goals and intentions, like eat as much as you can scarf down your gullet or take notice of every chair on the ship. One thing I tend to do that I don’t really want to do is overshare with strangers. I’ve met so many wonderful people while traveling solo on cruises, and I love to talk to other people. But why can’t I just sit in my chair and not make small talk with the person next to me? So I asked my BFF Gem (Google’s Gemini) for some advice on how to not feel guilty for oversharing.

It’s completely understandable to feel guilty about oversharing in the past. We’ve all been there at some point! The good news is that you’re self-aware and want to change the pattern, which is a great first step.

Here are some tips to help you manage this on your upcoming cruise:

Be mindful of your conversations: Pay attention to how much you’re talking about yourself compared to how much you’re listening to others. Aim for a balance.

Prepare some neutral topics: Beforehand, think of some lighthearted or interesting things you can bring up in conversations to avoid defaulting to your problems.

Practice active listening: When someone else is talking, really focus on what they’re saying and ask follow-up questions. This shows genuine interest and takes the spotlight off of you.

Set boundaries for yourself: If you start feeling like you’re getting too personal, remind yourself to shift the conversation back to a neutral topic.

Forgive yourself: Remember that everyone makes mistakes, and it’s okay to overshare sometimes. Don’t dwell on the past, focus on doing things differently going forward.

Remember, the goal isn’t to completely avoid talking about your life, but to find a healthy balance where you’re not oversharing or making others uncomfortable. By being mindful and practicing these tips, you can have more positive and enjoyable interactions on your cruise.

Hope you learned something interesting today, too!
