Planning Mid-Autumn Fest 2024

  • Learning from last year
  • Moon Treats
  • Who to invite?
  • Should we do it Korean style?

Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) is one of my favorite holidays from my time in Taiwan. I treasured the events that centered around friends and family eating and drinking together. Even though my language skills were limited, it never seemed to matter once we started cooking and eating.

Last year, in 2023, I wanted to recreate the holiday with my Florida bestie, my J. It didn’t quite go as planned, but we made the best and enjoyed it. Well, I enjoyed it and he humored me. I hope this year he’ll go along with it again and maybe find it a little more fun. To make that happen, I’m going to have to do a little more prep work.

This year, Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. I have a few weeks to prepare…

Not Going to Make the Same Mistakes

I still have skewers and the tongs from last year, along with the cast iron grill top. The other day I wanted to start a fire but couldn’t find a lighter, so I’ll need to get one of those — or find one of the many that I’ve bought and lost over the years!. I’m going to have to find a brush, too, since I know I have one somewhere in the kitchen. And we’ll need a spoon.

We ate through the last can of chickpeas I bought from Ollies, when I stocked up because they were cheap. I do have a lot of rice now, so I think I’ll make rice this year. J wasn’t too keen on the chickpeas, I don’t think. Rice it is.

Our skewers were also too “white.” They had just tofu, oyster mushrooms, and onions. This year, I’d like to add some color. Maybe sweet potatoes, peppers, and shrimp this year? Sweet potatoes will need to be pre-cooked slightly if I want them on skewers, or we’ll wrap them in foil and set in the coals.

I’m also thinking corn on the cob, fish balls, spicy peppers, cherry tomatoes, and and zucchini or squash. Maybe I’ll get fancy and wrap things in tofu skin, or marinate tofu in beer or ale. Whoa there, Jenny…can’t make things too complicated…

This year I’d like to prep the skewers ahead of time and take them out all at once. Last year my goats and pups thought I was setting the table for them, and they started nibbling whatever they could while I was brining things out from the house.

I’m asking friends what they put on their grills.

Mooncakes This Year

As much as I don’t really like mooncakes, I bought a tin of them. Costco had them on a pallet earlier this month — straight from Taiwan. I’m still going to get a tray of mochi in case we don’t like the ones that made the long journey from overseas and will have been sitting in my counter for another month until BBQ time.

I think I’d also like to maybe sit by the lake this year and look at the lake. If that doesn’t work, we’ll set out chairs on the highway to watch the semi’s go by as we gaze at the moon. 🙂

Who to Invite?

This year maybe we should invite more people over. Last year I considered asking some of J’s family over, but we decided it was too weird and they probably wouldn’t enjoy it. Maybe this year we’ll make it nicer and invite friends? Or just keep it as us. I dunno….

There’s still more to think about, so I’ll update this page once I start actually prepping!

Not Finished Yet

A friend who is Taoist and eats vegan sent me a link to this page: https://shop.ysvege.com/products/yachebarbecue202401 It looks like the trend now might be to have Korean flavors.
