Following: Ozempic for Weight Loss
- Ozempic, a brand name for the medication semaglutide, is primarily prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes.
However, it has gained significant attention for its potential benefits in weight management. - Ozempic i
s most effective when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
On a recent roadtrip to New York to visit cousins, one of our hot topics was the current weight-loss wonder drug. One cousin is a nurse and talked about it from a professional standpoint, and another cousin currently taking it gave me her personal experience. I’m overweight — definitely at the highest weight I’ve ever been at in my life — and cousin #2’s question to me was: Are you going to take it?
My answer came quick. No. No, I will not be taking Ozempic. I’ve read too much about the side effects and possible (likely) long-term consequences. No, thank you.
Sure, the chemical mechanics of the drug are amazing and fascinating. We are now able to control the brain through the gut, one step more on our journey to understanding the connection between the two systems.
Our conversations likely triggered my phone into suggesting all things Ozempic. On the way home, despite having mostly used YouTube for music videos for songs from the 90s, all I was suggested was videos about Ozempic. And it seems like all the creators I follow on YT have a video or two or three on the med. Listening to videos from doctors and researchers along with users,
- Mayim Bialik has an amazing two-hour video that everyone must watch, where she and her husband interview author Johann Hari about Ozempic, weight loss medications, and his experience on Ozempic.
- Beatrice Caruso has a video on whether she is going to try Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound. Uploaded 3 months ago to date (8/11/2024), the video already has 111k views.
- (There are others but I’m currently locked out of my account on my desktop, and my phone is dead and I don’t know where the charger is. Sigh… I hate unpacking after a long trip! Nothing is where it is supposed to be!)

A big question on my mind today is whether Ozempic is better than waterfasting. I found some interesting information on Reddit.
A redditer asked about combining Ozempic with water fasting, and another redditer replied that it did not work for her because of how Ozempic functions in the body. This redditer says she goes between water fasting and OMAD, and is adapted to fasting. She hoped the drug would increase her ability to fast. However, she says the drug “interfered with everything.” She stopped losing weight and couldn’t fast on the drug longer than three days since the drug caused hunger pangs and fatigue.
Water fasting naturally reduces insulin levels which allows the body to process fat as energy. Ozempic works contrary to this because it increases and regulates insulin (since it is meant to treat diabetes), which then restricts the body from accessing fat and using it as energy. So on Ozempic, you are starving yourself but not using fat as energy. I suppose an analogy would be being stranded on a raft in the ocean: There’s water all around you but it’s undrinkable.
Putting a pin in something else she says: Jason Fung says that an insulin level over 10 means that it is physically impossible for your body to access stored fat. I’ve had a lot of trouble fasting over the past few years, and this might help explain why.
