Celebrating the Month of February
February is the shortest of months, consisting of 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years, making it a unique and fleeting period on the calendar. Despite its brevity, February packs a powerful punch when it comes to significant observances and celebrations.
Winter is fleeting in Florida, but like the rest of the country, Floridians still must endure overcast skies that create cool days and chilly nights.
There is one national holiday in February, President’s Day, and an additional state holiday in Florida that celebrates the birth and accomplishments of Susan B. Anthony.
February is a time for important conversations and educational initiatives, highlighted by Black History Month, a period dedicated to honoring the contributions and achievements of African Americans. Simultaneously, February shines a spotlight on cardiovascular health with National Heart Health Awareness Month, encouraging individuals to prioritize well-being and take preventative measures.
Interwoven with these important national campaigns are a collection of unique and quirky daily celebrations, adding a touch of whimsy to the month and offering opportunities for lighthearted engagement.
Weather
February in Florida beckons with delightful weather, a welcome escape from winter’s chill. Imagine mild, sunny days with average temperatures ranging from the low 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (15-23 Celsius). While Northern Florida might experience slightly cooler temperatures, South Florida basks in warmer sunshine. Evenings call for a light jacket or sweater, perfect for enjoying a stroll along the beach or a leisurely dinner outdoors.
Florida truly earns its “Sunshine State” moniker in February, boasting an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily. Rainfall in February is minimal, making it one of the driest months of the year – fewer rainy days mean more time for exploring. And with lower humidity, the pleasant temperatures feel even more comfortable.
While February is known for its mildness, Florida weather can occasionally surprise you. Keep an eye out for occasional cold fronts that can briefly dip temperatures, especially in Northern Florida, sometimes even into the 40s Fahrenheit (4-10 Celsius). These cool snaps are usually short-lived, though. Though less frequent than other times of the year, severe weather, including thunderstorms and even tornadoes, remains a possibility in February. Staying informed about the local forecast is always a good idea.
While hurricanes are thankfully rare in February (hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th), it’s worth remembering that significant weather events can happen. For example, a strong El Niño pattern in February 1998 triggered severe storms and tornadoes across the state, reminding us that even in the mildest of months, nature can be unpredictable.
Public Holidays
January has one official public holiday in the United States, President’s Day, which is celebrated on February 17. State and federal service offices, like the DMV, are closed on February 17, and banks and the stock market are closed on this holiday, too. Stores are usually open on this day. President’s Day is also referred to as George Washington’s Birthday.
In Florida, we also celebrate Susan B. Anthony’s birthday on February 15. It is a legal holiday, so state offices are closed. Schools are not closed on this day, but schools are usually closed on February 17 for President’s Day. Susan B. Anthony Day is a holiday in Florida because she was a prominent leader in the women’s suffrage movement, which fought for women’s right to vote. This important woman’s birthday is also recognize in California, New York, Wisconsin, Massachusetts (on August 26), and West Virginia (on Election Day).

Month-Long Observances
Despite it being a short month, many month-long celebrations take place in February. Some are even contradictory — and might cause some problems to anyone who tries to do everything everywhere all at once! Do you fast, or do you feast?
National Black History Month
February is a time to celebrate the rich tapestry of African American history, culture, and achievements. The holiday is also referred to as African American Heritage Month, and it is rooted in the work of historian Carter G. Woodson. In this month, Americans reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Black individuals, their invaluable contributions to society, and the ongoing pursuit of racial justice. It’s a time for learning, reflection, and honoring the legacy of Black Americans.
National Fasting February
Observance of National Fasting February encourages individuals to explore the practice of fasting for various reasons, including health, spiritual growth, or as a form of protest or awareness. It can involve abstaining from certain foods or drinks for a specific period, and it’s often tied to personal reflection and mindful eating. Different fasting methods exist, and it’s important to consult with healthcare professionals before undertaking any significant dietary changes.
Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year
Celebrated by many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. The festivities, often falling in February, are filled with vibrant traditions, including lion dances, red envelopes, family gatherings, and delicious symbolic foods. Each year is associated with one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, adding another layer of meaning to the celebrations.
National Hot Breakfast Month
February’s chilly weather makes it the perfect time to highlight the importance of starting the day with a warm and nourishing breakfast. This observance encourages people to prioritize a healthy morning meal, emphasizing the benefits of hot foods like oatmeal, eggs, and breakfast burritos. It’s a chance to explore new recipes and establish healthy routines.
National Heart Month
Cardiovascular health takes center stage in February with National Heart Month. This crucial observance aims to raise awareness about heart disease, its risk factors, and preventative measures. It’s a time for health screenings, educational campaigns, and promoting heart-healthy lifestyles through diet, exercise, and stress management.
National Cancer Prevention Month
Dedicated to reducing the impact of cancer, February’s National Cancer Prevention Month emphasizes the importance of early detection, healthy habits, and cancer research. It’s an opportunity to educate the public about various types of cancer, risk factors, and the importance of regular checkups and screenings.
National Embroidery Month
February celebrates the intricate art of embroidery, a craft that has been cherished for centuries. This month encourages both experienced embroiderers and newcomers to explore the creative possibilities of needle and thread. It’s a time for workshops, exhibitions, and sharing the beauty of handcrafted textiles.
National Cherry Month
National Cherry Month celebrates the deliciously sweet and sour red fruit. From cherry pies to cherry blossoms, this observance highlights the versatility and flavor of cherries. It’s a time for enjoying cherry-themed treats and appreciating the beauty of cherry trees in bloom.
National Bird Feeding Month
As winter continues in many areas, February is a critical time for birds. National Bird Feeding Month encourages people to provide food and shelter for these feathered friends. It’s a chance to learn about different bird species, attract them to your backyard, and contribute to their well-being during the colder months.
